Business Wants Unemployment Benefits Extension

          It has been over 2 months since Congress and the President left town for the Christmas Holiday Season, terminating unemployment benefits for two million people without warning leaving these innocent victims facing record cold weather and high heating bills.

        These freezing unemployed citizens were promised that the situation would be fixed as soon as Congress returned following their vacation. Their President gave speeches on the subject from the tropical climate of Hawaii while most of the unemployed were facing their coldest winter in decades along with their heating bills. Where was the media outrage over this example of being out of touch?

        Congress and the President returned to work but nothing has been fixed as promised. All Obama has given us is the occasional speech and photo op. Where is the passion and drive necessary to accomplish these goals? Is it because he has already been re-elected?

        All it takes is an email, phone call or letter to remind your President, Senator and Representative of their promises to extend these unemployment benefits upon their return to work. Contact President Obama and Vice President Joe Biden to let them where you stand on this important issue.

           December 28th 2013 – President Obama, while vacationing in Hawaii, told the long term unemployed that their benefits have expired today, but they are in his prayers as they seek to
survive through the cold winter months without their lifeline. Obama said that he hopes that Congress will reinstate long term unemployment insurance when they return next month.

          Defending his administration’s apparent lack of compassion the President said “that the unemployed will be getting this nice T-shirt when I return”!

          After your President, Senators and Representatives returned to work after their long paid Christmas holiday vacation, they never restored the extension of unemployment benefits that they had promised before they left. Now that it is two months later, it is time to remind them of their pledges to extend long term unemployment benefits for their unemployed constituents who wondering how they were going to pay their heating bills during this record breaking winter season as well as helping get a job to get back on their feet again.

Congress Embraces Unemployment Part 2

        December 5, 2013 – Nancy Pelosi states that “we can not support a budget agreement without unemployment insurance, it would undermine us as a country”. “This is so unconscionable, it’s practically at the level of immoral to do to people who work hard, play by the rules, lose their job through no fault of their own are not able to continue getting unemployment insurance checks.”

        December 12, 2013 – Nancy Pelosi advised her colleagues to “embrace the suck” and vote for the budget bill without any unemployment insurance.

        Nancy Pelosi advised her colleagues to support a budget bill without any long term unemployment insurance extension even though she previously said the bill would undermine us as a country. Her exact advice was to “embrace the suck”. Her colleague, John Yarmuth, representative from Kentucky’s 3rd District, followed her advise and voted for the budget bill.

        In 2014 Nancy Pelosi has also voted for the bill that raised the debt ceiling as well as another budget bill. Neither one of these bills had any provision to extend unemployment insurance. According to Nancy Pelosi’s own definition, Nancy Pelosi and every other member of Congress who votes for these bills that do not include unemployment insurance are immoral.

        The last vote in the Senate on Feb. 6th failed by one vote, most notably the vote of Rob Portman of Ohio who previously said he would only approve a bill to extend unemployment that was paid for by cost cutting, which this bill did.

        Two months ago Congress terminated unemployment benefits for over 1.7 million people facing record cold weather heating bills while your Senators, Representatives and President left town for their holiday vacations. They promised to fix the unemployment extensions upon their return but it has still not been solved.

       Congress returns to work this week from their third break from D.C. this year with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid promising to put unemployment extensions at the front of his agenda. He can not do this alone, so now would be a good time to write, call or email your Senator, Representative and President to let them know where you stand on this issue and to let them know their actions will be remembered when you vote this year.

           The first night we were in Venice, we set out from our room near the railway station to walk to the Rialto Bridge. We followed the signs on building walls. They led us through a maze of streets, up bridges and over inky lagoons, the night growing late. Turn a corner and you’re in a brightly lit square filled with people eating at bistros and restaurants. Turn another and the square is deserted with the murmur of crowds in the distance. We sat in this quiet square to admire the finery in the shop window, the street lamp casting a glow on the pavement below.
